Kindergarten Phonics Interactive Notebooks

Since I teach kindergarten and first grade, I just had to make interactive notebooks for kindergarten so my students aren't jealous of my first graders! If you haven't seen my first grade interactive notebooks yet, you can read all about them here.

As mentioned in my last blog post, I will be using interactive notebooks when school begins because when I tried it out towards the end of last year, I found that my students were ALL so attentive and eager to participate in the activities. Adding in the interactive component REALLY made learning the skills WAY more interesting. This type of learning and these types of activities involve so much more than just listening to the teacher. They are also using their creative side, and cutting, gluing, coloring, writing, thinking, and planning.

Using interactive notebooks is a great way for children to learn and interact with new information, as well as, review and practice skills already introduced. Unlike completing worksheets or other printables, which go home right away, these books are always available to the children.

I've practically been working day and night to complete these kindergarten phonics interactive notebook activities. I have to admit, though, they were so much fun to create! They are perfect for our youngest learners because they don't contain an absurd amount of cutting or gluing. Some of the activities only have one cut. I really tried hard to be super creative and I am thrilled with the results.

As you can see, the activities are creative, meaningful, exciting and challenging! For each skill, the actual activity remains the same throughout. Just the content changes. For example, above you see an activity for real/nonsense words, where the children spin the spinner and create words. All the real/nonsense words activities look the same, but the letters and word families change. I did this so the children become familiar with the activities and will be able to complete them at stations or in small groups, without needing too much assistance from me.

Some of the skills have two different activities. For example, beginning sounds has a bingo dabber activity (or coloring with crayons; your choice) AND a lift the flap activity. I liked both ideas and couldn't decide which to include, so I just included both.

You can find my Kindergarten Phonics Interactive Notebook Activities here. Pick them up now, while they're on sale!

    1. It does Tonia! I looked through all the TEs to make sure I included the same skills. Since Journeys repeats so many of the skills all year long, I made sure to make lots of activities for each skill.

  7. Oh my goodness! This looks great! Phonics is such a needed skill, but it can get a little dry. I'm sure this will help add some spice into teaching phonics. This is on my wish list for sure! Thanks!

  8. Thank you!! Do you include instructions for how to introduce and set up the notebooks? How to teach the kids to create theirs? Did you have a different notebook for each subject?

    1. Hello, Kathie!

I include instructions on how to set up the notebook and how to complete each activity. I use one notebook for everything. Try it! I know you'll love it! :)

  9. I am attempting to start these with my Kinders soon but am struggling a bit with the organizational side of it. Do you glue in the big background page to their notebooks? Or are they responsible for cutting out all printed material and gluing it in? Any suggestions are welcome :)

    1. Hello! I never cut or glue anything for my students. These activities do not involve a lot of cutting, so they are able to do it all by themselves. With some practice, they become very proficient! Just as long as you model, model, model, in the beginning, you will find that they can do these activities on their own, after a while.
